Mar 05, 2008 · Keep the stock compression ratio which should be around 8:1. Use a teeny cam; the stock one will work fine, but keep it no more than about 200 degrees intake duration. You need a cam to match the 500-4500 rpm powerband of the heads. Crane makes a pretty nice Powermax 2020 that is 202/210 with a nice lift profile.

May 29, 2010 · I just put a new set of Edelbrock performer heads on my 454, used fel-pro gaskets and had no problems. I followed the torque specs and the directions that came with the heads and they said I would need to re-torque the heads in 2-3 hours of running time. They're leaking now and I probably only have 1 hr on them.

Nov 30, 2010 · I have flowed plenty of factory big block chevy heads, so here it goes. 290 & 049 heads have oval ports. 290s are closed chamber, 049s open chamber. They both flow in similar numbers until .400 lift when the 049 head will flow better at higher lifts because of less valve shrouding. This is especially true when 2.19 intake valves are installed.

I've got heads with a casting number of 336781. When I bought the engine I pulled the plugs and stupidly trashed them. So I bought replacements for a 82 c-20 truck.

The second gasket is the one I removed from the peanut headed '87 454. They are pretty close except the new LS-7 gasket doesn't have the 3 large holes at the bottom
