Not to mention I almost never use it but when I do need it its a live saver. For paved boat ramps you will likely be fine most of the time.

Increase your clearance and get good tires. Regarding my van specifically, my view is that any road I'm not comfortable driving in the van is probably a road I can more easily hike/run/bike.
