I have used the 4wd numerous times towing the boat up a dirt/grass hill in order to get it into the pole barn I store it in, and numerous times in the snow, but if you're just worried about the launch and you have good tires, 2wd will probably be fine.

The main factors in deciding if you'll need a 4WD van are terrain and weather conditions. 2WD vans are more than capable on most unpaved or forest service roads, so as long as you're in dry conditions and not fully off-roading, terrain usually won't be enough of a reason to go with a 4x4.
