Mar 03, 2008 · A GM-made 8.5" 28-spline posi carrier will have the number 410408 or 410409 on it. 410408 is for 2.73-up ratios & will fit your 3.08 rear end gears. 410409 is for 2.56-down ratios. The 8.5" & 8.2" axles have the same spline count & diameter on the inner end, and are interchangeable as long as the length is the same. 7.

Jul 20, 2006 · I have read that the best way to find out is to remove the cover and check the size of the ring gear bolts. The 8.5 ring gear has a 7/16 inch bolt diameter (the head of the bolt requires an 11/16 inch wrench). The 8.2 ring gear has a 3/8 inch bolt diameter (the head of ring gear bolt requires a 9/16 inch wrench).

Dec 27, 1999 · Found it. The 8.5 inch 10 bolt housing pictured in the May issue was installed in 70-76 Chevelles, 70-75 Novas, and 70-81 Camaros. Of course axle width and spring mounts will vary depending on application. But the cover pictured is perfectly round. It also shows the flanges at the bottom that Scooter reffered to.
