Changes in Oil Production Technology
There have been significant changes in technology in the production of oil since its first production as you will read more here. Because of its importance in our lives, it is best if we take a look at the changes that have taken place since it was discovered. The ancient people in Mesopotamia used a hardened substance called bitumen to construct sailing vessels and put jewelry pieces together. In Egypt, it was used to solidify the famous pyramids. Bitumen, asphalt and mortar although did not require drilling, were the substances that led to the discovery of oil.
The first method used to extract oil was by digging up the soil to reach the oil. In this site you learn more about how the traditional people used oil to treat diseases, light lamps to increase visibility and keep warm. Little information about oil existence was available at the time as you have seen in this site.
The next discovery to be made as you will find here, was the spring pole. The spring pole equipment as you will discover here was tied to a tree which made it possible to reach more depth and was increasingly used by the Ruffner brothers to make salt extraction easier. Oil was still not the primary goal but the people believed it could serve several purposes. However when steam power was introduced, the brothers were able to drill salt at a faster rate. A Yale chemist Benjamin Silliman discovered more about how oil could be converted into kerosene that is used for lighting lamps. After the discovery by Benjamin, there was more interest in this product and commercial extraction could be seen as you’ll see here.
As you learn more about how the demand for oil surged in this website. More oil deposits were also discovered deeper in the earth. However there were hard sediments that made drilling difficult hence the need for improved equipment. As a result, a technique called rotary drilling was developed whose head penetrated the hard rock without the need to remove debris regularly. The success of the rig was witnessed in Beaumont Texas where the drill hit a field and a lot of oil started flowing towards the surface. Because the world was getting ready for the first war, the need for oil skyrocketed leading to the development of better oil tools as a result of competition. The greatest achievement for the rotary drill was the ability to reach greater depths that the spring pole wouldn’t.
At the moment as we learn more here, rotary rigs are still in use for extracting oil. Even though the rotary rigs are still in use, they have been modified to today’s technology. As you will see here, the rigs are enhanced compared to the past. For example ,as you see here is that one rig can drill multiple oil wells and even move on their own.
